It seems that more and more kids are starting orthodontic treatments at an earlier age than when we were growing up. Wondering why that is and when your child should be getting braces? Dr. Zoey Gutierrez-Nickel of Dr. Zoey Orthodontics answers those questions!

The optimal time to start orthodontic treatment in a child is after all the permanent teeth have emerged but before the individual experiences a major growth spurt when the patient is around 10-12 years old.

However, in some cases, an interceptive phase is crucial to prevent developmental issues with the teeth and jaws. This interceptive phase happens around the ages of 7-9 years old and lasts up to 12 months. The main goal of orthodontic treatment during this phase is skeletal development correction.

Wondering what might cause skeletal development correction to be necessary? Some examples of issues are crossbites with teeth, crossbites with jaws, open bite, underbite, protrusion, and finger-sucking habits.

Thinking that it is about time for your child to start orthodontic care, or worried about a potential skeletal development issue? At Dr. Zoey Orthodontics, we provide complimentary consultations and follow-up visits to ensure that no potential issues are overlooked. Call us today at (772) 571-6938 to book an appointment!
