4 Tips for Avoiding Halloween Cavities

Don't be scared by all the sugar during this season! Follow these tips instead.

Fall brings lots of fun things: (slightly) cooler days, festivals, trick-or-treating... and LOTS of candy! Many parents worry about how to keep their kids' teeth cavity-free, especially during this time.

Dr. Nickel, DDS of Nickel Pediatric Dentistry gives his best tips to keep your kids' teeth healthy!

1. Don't let sugar sit on their teeth.

Set a specific time frame for eating candy, such as a 20-minute period. After kids have enjoyed their treats, make sure they brush their teeth right away! Grazing on treats all day will leave sugar on their teeth, which can lead to cavities.

2. Choose dark chocolate over milk or white chocolate.

Dark chocolate has a lower sugar content than milk or white chocolate. Less sugar = happy teeth! Dark chocolate also contains polyphenols, natural chemicals that can limit bad oral bacteria.

3. Try offering toys instead of candy.

Small toys are a fantastic alternative to candy at trick-or-treating, festivals, and parties. In addition to giving kids' teeth a break from all the sugar, it's also a good option for kids with allergies. Some families have started using the "Switch Witch" after Halloween, who comes to take leftover Halloween candy and leaves something fun in its place. Learn more about the Switch Witch here

4. Make sure they're having regular dental checkups.

Regular dental checkups are essential to the health of your child's teeth. Professional cleanings, fluoride, and education help prevent cavities and tooth decay. We would love to care for your child's teeth and begin building a lifetime of healthy oral habits!
