Swimming is an essential skill for children. Unfortunately, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 years old. Learning to swim is important no matter where you live, but especially in Indian River County, where water is everywhere. Children as young as 6 months old can enroll in swim lessons to provide a layer of protection against drowning.
When researching swim lessons, I learned about Infant Swimming Resources. I loved that ISR lessons are one-on-one, customizable, safe, and effective. We began our journey with ISR lessons in 2019, and it has been an amazing experience for our family. Last spring, we went to Juliana at Float2Swim. My son was getting refresher lessons, and at 20 months old, my daughter was taking lessons for the first time. My son was quickly able to regain his skills, and my daughter learned the swim-float-swim sequence in six weeks.
Infant Swimming Resources teaches survival (self-rescue) swimming, emphasizing learning to float. However, one of the misconceptions about ISR is that children will only learn to float. If a child is old enough, they will also learn how to swim. My son is a strong swimmer due to starting ISR lessons early, and my daughter loves to swim, too! ISR lessons actually gave them the freedom to have fun while also being safe and provided a great foundation to build on in the future.
So what do ISR lessons look like? They are daily (Monday - Friday) 10-minute lessons, one-on-one with a certified instructor, such as Float2Swim. While daily lessons might sound challenging, consistency is key to your child's success. The short lessons are perfect for a young child's attention span and are designed to keep kids safe. While attending lessons does take discipline, the commitment is so worthwhile when you see your child's amazing new skills.
While swim lessons are only one element of water safety, they are a key component. We remain vigilant around water, but ISR lessons have given me peace of mind. I love that my son can swim and play independently and that our family can enjoy the pool! One of my favorite examples of ISR is my son confidently going down the slide at North County Aquatic Center and popping up in the float position after coming off the slide.
Float2Swim will be starting her next round of lessons in May and continuing sessions throughout the summer. For more information and to save your spot, contact Juliana at (772) 913-0805 or j.marino@infantswim.com. I highly recommend Juliana and encourage you to enroll your child in swim lessons. Make water safety a priority this year - you won't regret it.
